captive shop

Those electroplating and metal finishing facilities that own, in a calendar year, more than 50 percent (based on area) of material undergoing metal finishing. Also see job shop.

joule (JOOL)

A measure of energy, work, or quantity of heat. One joule is the work done when the point of application of a force of 1 newton is displaced a distance of 1 meter in the direction of the force. Approximately equal to 0.7375 foot-pounds (0.1022 meter-kilograms).

electrochemical reaction

Chemical changes produced by electricity (electrolysis) or the production of electricity by chemical changes (galvanic action). In corrosion, a chemical reaction is accompanied by the flow of electrons through a metallic path. The electron flow may come from an external source and cause the reaction, such as electrolysis caused by a direct current (DC) electric railway, or the electron flow may be caused by a chemical reaction, as in the galvanic action of a flashlight dry cell.

incineration

The conversion of dewatered wastewater solids by combustion (burning) to ash, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.

integrated facility

Plants that, before treatment or discharge, combine the metal finishing wastewaters with significant quantities (more than 10 percent of total volume) of wastewaters not covered by the metal finishing category. Also refers to any facilities covered by any of the industrial pretreatment categories and various combinations of categories.
