Venturi meter (ven-TOOR-ee)

A flow-measuring device placed in a pipe. The device consists of a tube whose diameter gradually decreases to a throat and then gradually expands to the diameter of the pipe. The flow is determined on the basis of the difference in pressure (caused by different velocity heads) between the entrance and throat of the Venturi meter. Also see manometer.

level control

A float device (or pressure switch) that senses changes in a measured variable and opens or closes a switch in response to that change. In its simplest form, this control might be a floating ball connected mechanically to a switch or valve, such as is used to stop water flow into a toilet when the tank is full.

outfall sewer

A pipe that receives wastewater from a collection system or from a wastewater treatment plant and carries it to a point of ultimate or final discharge in the environment. Also see outfall.

overhead

Indirect costs necessary for a water utility to function properly that are not related to the actual collection and treatment of wastewater or actual treatment and delivery of water to consumers such as the costs of rent, lights, office supplies, management, and administration.

capillary forces (KAP-uh-larry)

The molecular forces that cause the movement of water through very small spaces.
