wet pit

dry well

A dry room or compartment in a lift station, near or below the water level, where the pumps are located, usually next to the wet well.

photosynthesis (foe-toe-SIN-thuh-sis)

A process in which organisms, with the aid of chlorophyll, convert carbon dioxide and inorganic substances into oxygen and additional plant material, using sunlight for energy. All green plants grow by this process. Also see chlorophyll.

volatile fatty acids (VFAs)

Compounds produced during digestion, the fermentation of carbonaceous BOD under anaerobic conditions, that are soluble in water and can be steam-distilled at atmospheric pressure. VFAs are commonly reported as equivalent to acetic acid. VFAs include acetic, propionic, and butyric acids, which are all important in the biological removal of phosphorus. Also called volatile acids and organic acids. 

hazard communication

Employee right-to-know legislation requires employers to inform employees (including pretreatment inspectors) of the possible health effects resulting from contact with hazardous substances. At locations where this legislation is in force, employers must provide employees with information regarding any hazardous substances that they might be exposed to under normal work conditions or reasonably foreseeable emergency conditions resulting from workplace conditions. OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS; Title 29 CFR Part 1910.1200) is the federal regulation and state statutes are called worker right-to-know laws. Also see Community Right-To-Know.
