infiltration (in-fill-TRAY-shun)

(1) The seepage of groundwater into a wastewater collection system, including service connections. Seepage frequently occurs through defective or cracked pipes; pipe joints and connections; or manhole walls, risers, or covers. (2) The entry of water into soil. In subsurface wastewater infiltration systems (SWIS), infiltration occurs where the subsurface wastewater meets and enters the soil. Also see percolation.
