rate of return
A value that indicates the return of funds received on the basis of the total equity capital used to finance physical facilities. Similar to the interest rate on savings accounts or loans.
percolating water (PURR-ko-lay-ting)
Water that passes through soil or rocks under the force of gravity.
amperometric titration (am-purr-o-MET-rick)
A means of measuring concentrations of certain substances in water (such as strong oxidizers) based on the electric current that flows during a chemical reaction. Also see titrate.
algae (AL-jee)
Microscopic plants containing chlorophyll that live suspended in water or attached to submerged surfaces, producing oxygen during sunlight hours and using oxygen during night hours. Their biological activities affect the pH, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) of the water.
calcium carbonate (CaCO3) equivalent
An expression of the concentration of specified constituents in water in terms of their equivalent value to calcium carbonate. For example, the hardness in water that is caused by calcium, magnesium, and other ions is usually described as calcium carbonate equivalent. Alkalinity test results are usually reported as miligram per liter CaCO3 equivalents.
