artesian (are-TEE-zhun)
Pertaining to groundwater, a well, or underground basin where the water is under a pressure greater than atmospheric and will rise above the level of its upper confining surface if given an opportunity to do so.
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
A chemical that encodes genetic information that is transmitted between generations of cells.
cross-connection
A connection between a drinking (potable) water system and an unapproved water supply or between a storm drain system and a wastewater collection system. Less frequently, a connection between 2 sections of a collection system to handle anticipated overloads of the system.
pan test
The pan test measures how uniformly wastewater is being distributed over the media of a trickling filter. Place pans at different locations on the filter surface. After a period of time, measure the water in each pan using a graduated cylinder or similar device. Each pan will have a similar amount of water if the wastewater is evenly distributed over the trickling filter.
best available technology (BAT)
A level of technology represented by a higher level of wastewater treatment technology than required by best practicable technology (BPT). BAT is based on the very best (state-of-the-art) control and treatment measures that have been developed, or are capable of being developed, and that are economically achievable within the appropriate industrial category.
