ultraviolet (UV)

Pertaining to a band of electromagnetic radiation just beyond the visible light spectrum used in water and wastewater treatment for disinfection. When ultraviolet radiation is absorbed by the cells of microorganisms, it damages the genetic material in such a way that the organisms are no longer able to grow or reproduce, thus ultimately killing them.

C Factor

A factor or value used to indicate the smoothness of the interior of a pipe. The higher the C Factor, the smoother the pipe, the greater the carrying capacity, and the smaller the friction or energy losses from water flowing in the pipe. To calculate the C Factor, measure the flow, pipe diameter, distance between 2 pressure gauges, and the friction or energy loss of the water between the gauges.

C Factor = (flow rate [gal/min]) / (193.75(diameter [ft])2.63 (slope)0.54)

or

C Factor = (flow rate [m3/s]) / (0.278 (diameter [m])2.63 (slope)0.54)

trench jack

Mechanical screw device used to hold shoring in place.

EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency)

A regulatory agency established by the US Congress to administer the nation's environmental laws. Also called the US EPA.

blinding

The clogging of the filtering medium of a microscreen or a vacuum filter when the holes or spaces in the media become clogged or sealed off due to a buildup of grease or the material being filtered.
