combined chlorine
All the products from reactions between free chlorine and other compounds, especially ammonia and nitrogen-containing organic substances. Reactions with ammonia produce chloramines (monochloramine, dichloramine, and trichloramine, also known as nitrogen trichloride). Because of their lesser oxidative power, chloramines are less effective disinfectants than free chlorine, but persist in water longer. Reactions between free chlorine and organic compounds can produce toxic disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMs).
topographic geology (TOP-o-GRAPH-ick)
A study of the rock and soil formations of an area for purposes of mapping underground conditions with identifications and elevations. Often called a geological survey.
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
A chemical that encodes genetic information that is transmitted between generations of cells.
variable, measured
A factor (flow, temperature) that is sensed and quantified (reduced to a reading of some kind) by a primary element or sensor.
reclaimed water
Wastewater that has been treated so that it can be reused for other purposes, such as irrigating land, replenishing surface and groundwater supplies, and augmenting drinking water supplies. Also see recycled water, potable reuse, and fit-for-purpose treatment.
