Vector Control Studies
Description
While the pollutant removal capabilities of any stormwater treatment BMP is a primary concern, design and operation of such systems can result in areas of standing water, which in turn can promote vector (mosquito) breeding and thus impact public health. In an effort to understand the relationship between mosquitoes and stormwater BMPs, several research studies have been conducted to stop vectors from utilizing these structures as habitat/harborage. Based on the study results, BMP maintenance recommendations and design guidelines have been developed to minimize vector habitat for future BMP implementation.Experience
Caltrans Statewide Larval Development Study
The Caltrans Statewide Larval Development Study estimated the time required for the development of adult mosquitoes from initial eggs. The study, implemented by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), looked at three areas: Sacramento, Los Angeles, and Lake Tahoe. The study also considered differences in temperature. The results of the study were used to reassess the maximum allowable drain time for treatment BMPs.
